Pre-retirement

Ideally, you need to be planning your retirement 10-15 years before you retire. Of course, you may not want to retire at 65. You may want to retire before or after that age, or perhaps wind-down your working hours at some point.

These days you have a lot more choice about when you’ll retire, but the type of retirement you’ll enjoy does depend on effective planning.

As you start thinking about when and how you’ll retire, you should ask yourself serious questions, such as:

  • Can I afford to retire when I want to?
  • Will I have enough money to enjoy my retirement?
  • I’m not even sure what pensions and investments I have! How can I find out?
  • I want to continue working, but do I have to work this hard?
  • Can I afford to give money to my family?
  • How can I make sure my loved ones inherit as much as possible?
  • How can I boost my income? Perhaps to pay for home improvements?

The answers are rarely straightforward and are often subject to outside influences.

How we can help you plan for retirement

We can help you find the answers. But before we do, we need to make sure that we thoroughly understand you. This isn’t just about understanding your wealth, it’s about what you want to do in retirement and what you want to pass on. So we’ll spend time getting to know you face to face before we provide any financial planning advice.

Often the solutions will involve:

  • Investment planning – to help ensure that your assets will grow faster than inflation so that you can have a sustainable pension when you retire.
  • Tax planning – to make sure that you only pay what tax is necessary, for example, on capital gains.
  • Estate planning – to make sure that you have wealth to pass on and that your loved ones only pay what tax is necessary.
  • Equity release and other types of borrowing in retirement.

The value of your investment (and any income from them) can go down as well as up and you may not get back the full amount you invested. Levels of taxation will depend on the individual circumstances of the investor and are subject to change.

The Financial Conduct Authority does not regulate Tax and Estate Planning.
